Until now, the best science we had on sports bras was the bouncing breast video created by sports bra manufacturer Shock Absorber. A video that quickly went viral, mostly due to 13-year-old boys.
But, thanks to several new studies, researchers believe they may have finally discovered the secret to the perfect sports bra. That's the good news, now here's the bad: no one has even attempted to create it yet.
Here's a rundown of the science, from the New York Times:
Study Number One:
Researchers put reflective tape on participants' breasts, then asked them to run with various types of support or bra-less, on a force platform. This allowed them to measure sway and bounce, as well as how breast movement affected a woman's stride.
They discovered that women with unsupported breasts landed more heavily and on the inside of their feet, potentially putting them at risk for stress injury.
Study Number Two:
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth discovered that when a woman runs, her breasts do not just bounce up and down. They actually take on more of a figure eight pattern.
It's rare to find a sports bra that can accommodate this side-to-side movement. Most bras offer a choice: smoosh it all down flat, or encapsulate each breast.
Last, but not least:
In a study published in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia, claim they've discovered the perfect sports bra, it just hasn't been invented yet.
They discovered that when a woman wears a crop top-style compression bra, but gently lifts the breast from underneath with a series of foam pads -- "elevating the low point of breast displacement dynamically" -- jiggle is minimized. Even women with large breasts reported greater comfort wearing this experimental type of bra.
So, what's a woman to do until this "miracle" sports bra comes on the market? Experts give annoyingly obvious advice, such as find a bra that feels supportive. Jump up and down, jog, twist, whatever you have to do right there in the fitting room to make sure that the bra you buy will give you the support you need.
Oh, for pete's sake, someone make a prototype of that compression/pad bra quick. Not only will you be rich, but women everywhere will thank you.
